Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. Streetscape Improvements | Project Brief

SERVICES: Conceptual Design
LOCATION: Bethune-Cookman University – Daytona Beach, FL
CLIENT: City of Daytona Beach
COMPLETION: 2022
PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Integrating several key principles of the Complete Streets design approach, Castle Bay has been working with the City of Daytona Beach in overhauling one of the primary spine roads bisecting the Bethune-Cookman University campus. Today, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd is an unnecessarily wide expanse of pavement with very little multi-modal, safety, and aesthetic features despite an ample, 50’ wide right-of-way. In an effort to increase safety, functionality, and beautification of this critical downtown corridor, Castle Bay has proposed a concept which moves the sidewalks off the curb limiting potential vehicular/pedestrian conflicts, calls for well-defined intersection and mid-block crosswalks, bisected the two-way vehicular access with a central landscape median for traffic calming and aesthetic value, and implemented a streetlight and banner program for both increased safety and informational purposes for all pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
