In late 2020, Major League Baseball made an announcement to approximately 160 minor league baseball teams that minor league ballparks would have to meet MLB’s Professional Development League (PDL) standards, requiring these ballparks to conduct major upgrades to their facilities. Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, one of the most historically significant ballparks in the Nation having been the first home of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, hired Barton Malow in 2024 to begin the initial $30 million in facility improvements including a new player development facility, home and away clubhouses, batting cages, fitness areas, and variety of other critical improvements as part of “Phase I” of this multi-phase project.
In early 2026, the City of Daytona Beach and Barton Malow brought in Castle Bay Design Studio to take a leading role in a variety of “Phase II” efforts primarily focused on the facilities immediately adjacent to and surrounding the ballpark, most notably being the historic 100-acre City Island Park located in the middle of the Halifax River and serving as the primary gateway into Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Phase II improvements include a complete renovation of City Island Park, the primary JRBP parking facility; pedestrian and fan circulation spaces; park programming enhancements; JRBP fan experience and ballpark entry areas; and improvements along Orange Avenue, including a dedicated WWII memorial plaza.
