After a year of charrette-style conceptual planning sessions with City staff, Castle Bay landscape architects led the design of this historic streetscape renovation spanning nearly 3/4 of a mile through the heart of the Historic Lincolnville neighborhood in downtown St. Augustine. MLK Avenue has long been the heart of the neighborhood and features a variety of mixed uses, including historic residential homes, historic churches, and a variety of commercial businesses, including retail shops and restaurants. Using extensive experience in historic streetscape design and local knowledge and experience in St. Augustine, Castle Bay proposed a contextually sensitive renovation design that included the undergrounding of overhead utility lines and poles, the expansion and safety of the existing sidewalk network to feature wider sidewalks, and ADA-compliant, aesthetically powerful, and historically accurate materials and design elements. Additionally, the addition of streetscape lighting of a historic character and the strategic placement of oak trees to supplement the existing oak canopy were also carefully woven into the final design.
